8/23/2010: Florida State to play key role in national center on commercial space flight
The Florida State University will play a key role in a world-class consortium assembled by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that joins academia, industry and government to address the present and future challenges of commercial space transportation.
Florida State will contribute to the new Air Transportation Center of Excellence for Commercial Space Transportation through its leadership of the Florida Center for Advanced Aero-Propulsion (FCAAP), which has been selected as one of the FAA center's core members.
"The bringing together of university and other experts in the field of aerospace from around the United States will result in the type of partnerships that can move the field forward," said Kirby Kemper, vice president for Research at Florida State. "The fact that Florida institutions are major players in this area is affirmed by FCAAP being named as one of the leaders of this FAA Center of Excellence."
4/22/2010: Groundbreaking Ceremony Planned for New Aero-Propulsion, Mechatronics and Energy Building at Florida State University
Florida State University President Eric Barron is scheduled to lead a groundbreaking ceremony next week to mark the start of construction on a 60,000 square-foot facility that will support advanced research in aero-propulsion, mechatronics and sustainable energy engineering. The building will be the future home of FCAAP and will promote the synergistic nature of the research to take place there.
4/22/2010: FCAAP Ph.D. Student Develops Cutting-Edge Technology
University of Florida Ph.D. student, Vijay Chandrasekharan, developed a microelectronic systems (MEMS) - based capacitive wall shear stress sensor for turbulence measurements as part of his dissertation. Currently a post doctoral research associate, Chandrasekharan’s research focuses on further development to transition the shear stress sensor to wind tunnel facilities at NASA, with the ultimate goal of conceiving a commercially viable product. In recognition of his development, Chandrasekharan received one of thirteen post doctoral entrepreneurial fellowships awarded by the Kauffman foundation. The fellowship is intended to use entrepreneurship education and mentorship to commercialize scientific discoveries.
